RAPID CITY, SD— At a press conference held Monday, June 23, 2025, city and regional officials announced that Pete Lien & Sons has generously donated a 22.78-acre parcel of land to the City of Rapid City.
The property, located at the intersection of Seger Drive and 143rd Avenue, will serve as a catalyst for future development in the area. A significant portion of the land is earmarked as the future site of the Rapid City Sports Complex, a project expected to bring long-term recreational and economic benefits to the community.
During the announcement, Mayor Jason Salamun also shared plans to request approval from the Rapid City Common Council to allocate unused Vision Fund dollars to help support the development of the new facility.
Mayor Salamun is terming the collaborative effort ‘Project Catalyst’ with the potential of “dramatically enhancing and improving” the economy and quality of life for residents of South Dakota’s second-largest city for generations. “The proposed sports complex has the potential to be a game-changer for the Rapid City region,” said Mayor Salamun. “A vision you can accomplish alone isn’t much of a vision. This announcement has been a long time coming and is a testament to the spirit of collaboration in our community. We’re grateful for the Rapid City Sports Commission, city staff and Council, and community partners who will be a big part of making this happen. While there’s still much work to do, we’re thrilled to share our intentions to go all-in on bringing this vision to life.”
Pete Lien, owner of Pete Lien & Sons, Inc. said “Our family-owned business of over 80 years is excited to provide this donation of land, which will help Rapid City and western South Dakota grow with a great facility, opportunities to host more activities and to draw more kids and their families to the area.”
In recent months, it was also announced that Pete Lien & Sons, will serve as the lead sponsor for the state’s long-awaited shooting sports complex currently under development in the Black Hills region. As part of this sponsorship agreement, the new facility will bear the company's name, officially becoming the Pete Lien & Sons Shooting Sports Complex.
