Years later, in 2018, the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety (DRMS) and Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (CSSGA) selected Pete Lien & Sons as the award winner of the Jack Starner Mined Land Reclamation Award for Innovation and Collaboration. According the director of DRMS, "Pete Lien & Sons has shown extraordinary efforts in thinking outside the box to facilitate successful reclamation on a difficult site. Through the innovative thinking of using fish emulsions from a state fish hatchery and the mixing of expended mash from a distillery, Pete Lien & Sons has been able to supplement poor growth medium to support a sustainable vegetative cover."
