(July 2026) Rapid City, SD: Pete Lien & Sons is proud to support the future of Rapid City by donating land for the community’s planned sports complex.
During a recent press conference at City Hall, Mayor Jason Salamun and other local officials provided an update on the project and formalized the land donation agreement with Pete Lien & Sons. The agreement recognizes the company’s contribution of the original project site along Mall Drive. Company President Pete Lien attended the press conference and expressed the family’s support for the project. “Our family business is glad to donate the land and be part of the effort to bring more opportunities for the people of Rapid City to enjoy,” Lien said.
Building Opportunities for Future Generations
Mayor Salamun described the planned complex as “a win for our quality of life,” noting that it will provide high-quality facilities for youth and amateur athletes while creating lasting recreational opportunities for Rapid City families. The complex is also expected to strengthen community pride and contribute to the local economy. By attracting regional and national tournaments, the facility could bring additional visitors to Rapid City, support area hotels and restaurants, and encourage further private development.
Rapid City Sports Commission Director Domico Rodriguez said the project will help put Rapid City on par with other athletic facilities throughout the region. He also emphasized its potential to serve people of all ages while filling an important need within the community.
Project Agreements Move Forward
The Rapid City Sports Complex RFP Review Committee has spent several months evaluating proposals and interviewing potential project partners. Five key agreements are now advancing for consideration by the Rapid City Council:
- A land donation agreement with Pete Lien & Sons for the original site along Mall Drive
- A management agreement with Sports Facilities Companies for the professional operation of the completed complex
- An architecture and engineering services agreement with TSP, Inc.
- A Construction Manager at Risk agreement with Scull Construction
- A naming rights partnership agreement, which is still being finalized
- These agreements mark an important step in moving the sports complex from planning to construction. City officials anticipate that the facility could open for activities and events as early as fall 2028 or 2029.
